Correspondence: Letter from Elva Swan Beebe to Mary Wills 20 October 1991
Elva, daughter of LUCY JANE DEWALT and JAMES FREDERICK SWAN. Mary is daughter of VERTIE VENETA DEWALT (sister to Lucy Jane) and URIAS VICTOR WILLS. Elva discusses her life and current health issues and concerns about winter in Kearney, Nebraska. Her brother KENNETH SWAN and wife REGENA YOUNG SWAN, Spokane WA visited with ELSIE BALTZ WILLS (wife of RONALD HAROLD WILLS and brother to MARY WILLS) and Elsie's daughter. Mentions that Kenneth got to know Ronald and Elise during Ronald's illness. Talks about Aunt VERTIE brought Kenneth back from Centralia where she and WILFORD WILLS had gone to Grandpa's funeral (WILLIAM THOMAS DEWALT)boyS were about 3 years. Describes her mother (LUCY JANE DEWALT SWAN) having her blind eye removed at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota: recovering and have to take care of Grandpa DeWalt and his death and being absent from her husband and kids was difficult (she was in Centralia, Kansas). Elva states it seemed a long time. Got home July 3 so had big reunion. Thought Grandpa died in Apr (NOTE 3 May 1916. DWIGHT SWAN illness and death. VERNA HANSEN SWAN, wife (married for 67 years) was able to take care of him, the daughter SHIRLEY SWAN NOE and son in law NESTOR NOE, live next door the live in Arcadia. DWIGHT SWAN buried in Whittier. Expresses concern for ELEANOR WILLS LOVE after her long siege of nursing (husband ELBERT HOWARD LOVE) Talks about a tribute by Aunt HETTIE DEWALT. Wonders about HELEN HARRISON ELLIOTT and RODNEY HARRISON, not heard from them; had heard Helen had "nervous breakdown". Relates that when Helen's father, Raymond was considering remarrying (while in nursing home) Helen wanted a prenuptial agreement. "Daughter like Mother. Apparently, her mother ANNA LOCKWOOD DEWALT HARRISON, insisted her brother CHARLES DEWALT do this when he married ELIZABETH STEELE DEWALT. Anna was determined to keep the "DeWalt Money" & things among blood kin. Ends letter with by saying: "I am the eldest living member of the third" generation who was around, way back when.

Correspondence: Letter from Elva Swan Beebe to Mary Wills 26 April 1992
Note: One of the last letters written by Elva, as she died 31 August 1992. Elva talks about her Easter project of making cookies rather than divinity eggs-weather damp-not good for divinity but decided to make salads for her friends. She says fixing food not problem but delivering is. Mentions seeing HELEN HARRISON ELLIOTT both surprised over the changes of 70 years. Keeping a good attitude is most important with the adjustments. Makes comments about her life now. Noted KENNETH SWAN and wife REGENA HANSEN SWAN were invited to Wills reunion. Had heard from the WARD's shortly after VADA's death. MAE never did much in correspondence. FERN has physical disabilities unable to write. No news from HELEN HARRISON ELLIOTT, since Uncle RAYMOND HARRISON (her father) and RODNEY HARRISON (her brother) died. Mentions Uncle Will (WILLIAM PENN DEWALT) remember knowing WANDA (NOTE: according William P Dewalt family group the name was WYLMA-not certain what the name is so listed in these records as WYLMA WANDA DEWALT GILLESPIE) Elva describes her as a cute little girl that came with wife #1 (EUGENIA VAUGHN) to Grandpa DeWalt's farmhouse (see story in correspondence dated 10 June 1968)States Uncle Will was a likable guy. Uncle Charley (CHARLES DEWALT) a good entertainer and fun when away from home. At home fault finding grouch!! Story of Uncle Charles and his hatred for onions -how her 3 brother played a trick on him and Uncle Charley's reaction. Reflects on a trip, years later, when Elva, EDWIN, and DWIGHT went back to the farm without their parents, (Uncle Charley-bachelor- lived with his mother SUSAN MARY WILLIAMS DEWALT and WILLIAM THOMAS DEWALT). The kids were playing card games (upstairs near Charley's room) Elva grandparents believed cards a forbidden, sinful thing (also her mother LUCY JANE DEWALT SWAN). Kids were making more noise and brought in Uncle Charley yelling "Gol-danget, Ma, these kids are playing cards" that caused Grandma to bounce up the stairs and kids received lecture on the underhanded way they were going against her rules on the danger of cards. She was right on about sneaking. Elva could never understand the "evil" of cards. Apparently Uncle Charley used "Gol-darn" for years, Elva could not understand how he got away with something so close to swearing. He also used the term "taking off tups" used when a person tried to get even with another.

Wills. Wills Family Farming-Future Farmers handling the horses.
From Eleanor Wills Love History: At a very young age the boys, Ronald, Max and Wilford, started helping my father in the field with the horses and learned to drive them as feed them and the cows and pings. We girls soon started feeding the chickens. The barnyard was on the far side of the barn with its horse rough for watering the animals. In the summer Pap would occasionally fill it with fresh water so we could enjoy a swimming pool. To the right of the barn was the pig pens. We were know as the "Wills Elephant Ranch" because of the advertising sign on the side of the barn.

Before automated combines, horses were used to pull the combine. Here there are 28 horses-usually draft horses were used. This combine was in use up to late 1940's. Harvest was a joint effort for the farmers and a major event in the Wills household

Took the old Dodge.Note about Dry Falls: no longer carries water, but is the remnant of what was once the largest waterfall known to have existed on earth. Viewing the 3.5 miles of sheer cliffs that drop 400 feet, it is easy to imagine the roar of water pouring over them. (Niagara Falls by comparison, is one mile wide with a drop of 165 feet). Near present day Coulee City.

She had the uterus removed 20 years before and felt that her prayers had been answered in her being spared to see her children were all grown. Her biggest concern was Grandpa but she said she thought he would probably marry again, which he never did for 28 long years. He really missed her. It was as she said "those of you left here grieve my passing but so many whom I love and whom I have been away from for so long are on the other side and I am anxious to see them again." I will always be grateful to your Aunt Anne Mae and Aunt Mary for giving their time and service to them at this time.
