    Notes
    • Family legend: Mary Frances would sneak food to her uncle, who we think was Stephen, who was hiding because he shot the General. He was not to let any one pass without the password, General refused to give one. It was dark and apparently General was a bit drunk. This has not been verified!

MILITARY: General Jackson was instrumental in the Confederate victories at Second Manassas, Antietem, and Chancellorsville. ( 2-4 May 1863) After the battle of Chancellorsville, General Jackson, riding at night, was shot by his own troops. He lingered for a time, and hopes were high for his eventual recovery, then pneumonia set in. On May 10, 1863, shortly after 3:00 pm, Stonewall Jackson, in delerium, said, "Order A.P.Hill (at this time commanding a division, later a corps) to prepare for Action! Pass the infantry to the front! Tell Major Hawks..." Then the General paused, smiled, and spoke his last words, "Let us cross over the river, and rest under the shade of the trees." He was 39 years old. On May 3, 1863, in the midst of the brilliant victory at Chancellorsville, he was wounded by his own men, usually supposed to belong to one of the North Carolina regiments, and died a week later. Stonwall's Brigade's 33rd Virginia Infantry
