    Married Fifty Years

A Pleasant Time at Mr. and Mrs. Smauel Hoey's Golden Wedding

January 8th, 1899, was the fiftieth anniversary of the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Hoey, who reside near Murraysville, PA. The occasion was celebrated by all the children and grandchildren gathering around the old hearthstone.

Samuel Hoy was married to Miss Suannah Dewalt at the residence of the late William Thompson, of Washington, January 8th 1939, by the Rev. David Kirkpatrick, D.D. From the union were born eight sons and two daughters, two of whom are dead. The eldest daughter died at New Alexandria March 16, 1880 [Margaret J. m. David Allsworth].

The eldest son, died in Andersonville Prison, Aug 13, 1864 [James] after serving three years in defense of his country.

Those present at the golden wedding were W.H. Hoey [William Henry] wife and six children; J.T. Hoey, wife and five children; T.M. Verner, wife (formerly Ella Hoey) and one child; S.K. Hoey, wife and five children; J.L. Hoey, wife and one child; E.D. Hoey, wife and three children; A.M. Hoey, [Albert] wife and one child; and G.W.B. Hoey, wife and one child.

A short time before dinner was announced, while the aged couple were being entertained in the dining room a beautiful Brussels carpet and Smyrna rug were spread on the parlor floor and two easy chairs were placed up on it. The children present then gathered their families in groups within the spacious parlor and the aged father and mother were ushered in and seated in their midst. Frank C. Hoey, their eldest grandson [ ?] fourteen years of age , then arose and presented the gifts in a neat and appropriate address as follows:

Dear father and mother, -- Fifty years ago today you were joined in the holy bonds of matrimony and today we, your children and grandchildren are gathered around the old hearthstone to celebrate the fifthiet anniversary, commonly called the golden wedding. It is true that tow of our number are not here. One the eldest daughter and sister, whose remains lie beneath the sod of the beautiful cemetery of New Alexandria, the other the eldest son and brother, who fought and died for his country, and whose remains now lie mouldering beneath the sod of the sunny South [Andersonville GA] they are not here but they are not forgotten. You have lived long and labored hard and God has prospered you. You have reared a large family and have lived to see them also joined in matrimony, and a goodly number of grandchildren also are here to celebrate the day.

And now in behalf of your children and grandchildren I present you this beautiful carpet that you now sit upon; also an easy chair for each of you. In these you can rest your weary and care worn bodies in your declining years.

And to each of you I present a pair of gold spectables. When your forms are feeble and your eyes grow dim with age you can by their aid be enabled to read the word of God and be comforted thereby. Take these gifts, though small, as a token of our love and our appreciation for the kindness we received in our childhood.

At noon dinner was announced and the aged couple took their places at the head of the large table, around which they gathered their children as in bygone days. The old table fairly trembled with its load of turkey, chicken, beef, wild game and all the delicacies of the season. The day was spent in a social way and was enjoyed by both old and young. The whole number of presents given the aged couple was 41.
