      Reiff, Joseph, farming and stock; sec. 15; P.O. Roanoke: was born in Lancaster Co., Pa. Sept.14, 1828; he married Miss Mary J. Wilson Sept. 16, 1850; she was born in Ohio Oct 28, 1852; she died Dec. 27, 1860; they had four children, two living--Samuel W. and Andrew S. His second wife was Miss Mary Bally; she was born in Richland Co., Ohio, Oct 5, 1837, and married July 11, 1861; they have three children--John B., Mary J., and Lizzie C. He lived in Lancaster Co. twenty-one years, then moved to Bloomington, Ill., remaining four months; then came to Woodford Co., Ill., and worked on a farm; he then improved a farm near Benson; and in 1859 he came to his present place; he is no office seeker, his only office being School Director. On arriving in the county he had less than $18; his farm now contains 320 acres.

      He and second wife, Mary Bally Smith, were called Grandpap and Grandmother by their grandchildren. Moved to Woodford Co. IL in 1848. Accumulated 440 acres. Moved to Gage Co. in 1889 and bought 560 acres, much of which he later gave to his five children Mary: Two of her four children died young. Mary: Family came from Germany, settled in Pennsylvania, later moved to Ohio, and later to Illinois, where they established their home. After husband Joseph's death, maintained a comfortable home in Holmesville, Nebraska, until her own death. Granddaughter Estella Reiff who stayed with her there for two years while going to high school said she could not even write her own name in English, so Stella always wrote her letters to relatives. Was a good cook and baked gluten bread because she was diabetic. Died of gangrene in heel.
      I. Samuel W. Reiff, (son of Joseph Reiff and Mary Jane Wilson) b. 14-Mar-1852. He married Lydia.
      II. Andrew S. Reiff, (son of Joseph Reiff and Mary Jane Wilson) b. 04-Aug-1855. He married Catherine Mast, b. 1-Jan-1860, (daughter of Abraham Mast and Barbara Apple) d. in Illinois. Andrew died 18-Jun-1911 in Gage County, Nebraska, buried: in Brethren Cem., Holmesville, Nebraska. Farmed 80 acres in Ilinois for some years. In 1884 sold and came to Gage Co, NE. Bought 200 acres in Rockford Twp. Gradually bought more until owned 1000 acres. Built "beautiful home...surrounded with evergreens. "Andrew Reiff had started live with practically nothing and at his death was a man of wealth, gained through his industry and carefulness...His religious faith was that of the Dunkard church and in politics he was a Republican.>
      Listed in the Nebraska State Farmers Gazeteer, for 1890-91. Half brother to John Bally Reiff.
      Plat of Rockford, Gage County, 1922 shows over 400 acres of land adjoining John B. Reiff's land, held in the name of Cathierine Reiff and in join name of Catherine and Mabel Pearl Reiff. Catherine: Spouse of Andrew Reiff, half-brother of John Bally Reiff. In 1922 had in her own name acres adjoining John B. Reiff's propety, and in name of her and daughter Mabel Pearl another 160 acres. The Mast family, A. W. Mast and Aaron Mast owned 100 and 160 adjoining acres respectively, just 1/2 mile east of the Reiff holdings.
      A. George W. Reiff, b. 28-Dec-1882 in Woodford Co., IL. He married Clara Lewis, married 5 Feb 1908, b. 26 Mar 1885 in Richardson Co., NE, (daughter of John Lewis and Anna Williams). In plat of Rockford section of Gage County, 1922, is shown as owning one section of 160 acres and another of 100 together with a C. Reiff (probably Catherine, his mother).

Fink and Hannah Melinda Wattenbarger) d. 22-Nov-1956 in Beatrice, Nebraska, buried: in Brethren Cem., Holmesville, NE., John died 18-Dec-1924 in Beatrice, Gage County, Nebraska, buried: in Brethren Cem.Holmesville, NE. *Moved to Gage Co., Nebr. with three oldest children and wife 1889-90. There *settled on farm close to Brethren Church, of which he was a lay minister who *used to read from the pulpit on Sundays. Old friends said he owned several *farms in Nebraska, but lost all but home farm in California speculation. Had several strokes; died of uremia. Was justice of the peace, on school board, and a director of the elevator at Holmesville, of the Blue Springs Telephone Company and a member of the Crop Improvement Association of Gage County. A 1922 plat of the Rockford township of Gage County shows the Reiff name on a total of 820 acres of land, most of it adjoining, with the names of John B., G. W., Catherine, William H., and Catherine and Mabel Pearl on various parcels. Emma: Always called "Sue." One of her ancestors, Matthias Gish, was on the Pennsylvania Merchant when it landed in Philadelphia in 1733.The Gish family was one of the early settlers of Roanoke; supposedly one of the early Gishes was the first pastor of the Panther Creek "Dunker" (German Lutheran) church and named Roanoke after his birthplace in Roanoke, Virginia. Martha: *Came from Tenn. to Gage Co., Nebr. Her mother may have worked *as housekeeper for John B. Reiff. Remembered by grandchildren as a tall, *stern woman but loving grandmother. Pacifist. Angry when grandson joined * Boy Scouts, because he then "had to wear a uniform and "march." Wore long dresses and sunbonnets of the time. Sunday garb was long black coat and black bonnet. Buried wearing little lace cap of Brethren and Mennonittes.
      Pall Bearers were Ross Beckner, Ray Brubaker, Fred Root, Elvyn Wrightsman, Earl Howard, and Claude Dell.
      Her grandfather, John Michael Fink, (see his notes) served in the War of 1812, from which he contracted severe rheumatism. Her grandmother applied for and was awarded a pension of $4.00 per month.
      Her older sister, Sarah Elilzabeth Fink, married Daniel Clark Bashor, Brethren minister, who in 1885 moved to Nebraska to open what is now the Holmesville Church of the Brethren

MI, (daughter of James Eratus Divine and Lydia Ann Schock) occupation Housewife, Nursery, LPN, d. 18 May 1963 in Sanger, CA, buried: in Arnold, NE Cem. Arnold NE. James died 10-Aug-1940 in Arnold, Custer County, Nebraska, buried: in Arnold Cem. Arnold NE. Moved to Arnold, NE in 1925 Died of a rattlesnake bite. He found it partway out of its hole and tried to hold it with a piece of post and cut off its head with his pocketknife. The snake wriggled out enough to strike, biting him in a large vein in his hand. He killed the snake, mounted his horse and rode home, and his son rushed him to the hospital. The location of the bite caused the poison to spread too rapidly for the doctors to save him and he died less that 24 hours after he had been bitten.

      Letter from his daughter, Helen Hein, to Joseph W. Reiff: "I have heard that he rented a farm close to his father's when he was a boy and started farming for himself, taking his oldest sister, Ida, along to keep house for him

      "None of the first family (Carson, Charles, Ida, Oma, Stella) was able to get a high school education because of finances and always being needed to help after the babies of John B. Reiff's second family started arriving. My father only went through the ninth grade, but he was a great reader, always had Extension Service literature and tried to follow their advice, and advanced himself in every way possible. He was known for his honesty and industry." Hazel: During her high school years, stayed with grandmother Lucy Ware Schock, a widow by then, in Blue Springs, NE, during her high school years. She graduated from Blue Springs High School in 1908. During part of that time she had only one dress, which she washed evenings and ironed before she went to school in the mornings. Nellie Maze, a classmate , also stayed there. Graduated from Three Rivers, MI, High School abouit 1903-4. Claimed she ice skated eight miles to school Father would not permit her to teach when whe graduated from Blue Springs HS, although she had a teaching certificate.

Hein and Hattie Yoder) d. 21 Aug 1993. "Aunt Stella (Estella) married Rober Earl "Bob" Harria, and while we were growing up they lived in Arnold, Nebraska. Their older child, Theda Arline, and I were in the same class in Arnold High. I stayed with them Monday-Friday during my high school years and was their hired girl and sitter for their younger child 'Bobby.' At spring cleaning time, all the bed ticks were washed and refilled with fresh oat straw. Had bedsteads and springs to lay the ticks on, but when had more company than beds, some people slept on the floor.

A lively and vivacious woman. During her husband's mental problems, helped support the family by working in the school cafeteria and later in the state mental hospital where he died. After her mother Martha's stroke, helped her maintain herself at home as long as she could, then had to place her in a nursing home. Was finally able to retire to a small modern apartment in Beatrice near her oldest daughter's home. Rolland: Tried various enterprises unsuccessfully, including selling hail insurance and contracting for demolition of old buildings. Later in life, had problems with mental disturbances, and finally died in the state mental hospital in Beatrice
