MARRIAGE: copy of Marriage License Smyth County 1875 to James Love 22 years old and Mary Frances Donithan (per record) 16 years old.

BIRTH: Family records indicate birth year to be 1860. However, this does not agree with the Marriage License in which she was listed as 16. There is a family story that states Mary Frances was 5 years old when she was sent to give food to her Uncle Sharp, who was hiding out after shooting Stonewall Jackson and that date was 2 May 1863. (would make her birth about 1858)

"Also I saw in your notes that you had a second one in which you wanted to verify if James F Litteral, that you had listed is the same person as the one which Crystal Litteral Sizemore had listed at Geni. I can tell you that YES this is the same person. Those folks she has listed are his family (parents, brothers and sisters) Crystal's Grandfather and mine were brothers. Her father and she have done a HUGE amount of the Litteral family history, they live still in Corbin, Kentucky and actually they maintain the Prewitt Cemetery there where quite a number of my grandfathers relatives are buried."

67 Notes about Henry Clay Farmer
Added by jayhenderson177 on 12 Jun 2007

2. HENRY CLAY2 FARMER (JOHN1) was born July 18, 1848 in Mt. Pleasant,
Virginia, and died 1938 in Philomath, Benton, Oregon. He married RACHEL
JANE COLDIRON February 29, 1872 in Harlan, Harlan, Kentucky, daughter of
ABNER COLDIRON and JANE BALL.

Notes for HENRY CLAY FARMER:
Viola Davidson Farmer gives Henry's birthdate as August 18, 1848. Viola
writes: "When he was a small boy, his family moved to Harlan, Kentucky.
They were farm people, who trace their blood lines back through Daniel
Boone to England. Henry acquired quite a bit of education, his father
having bought and used a large, well-selected library, at one time
thought to be the best in Kentucky. Henry had a deep understanding of
English and mathematics. He taught school in several places throughout
the state. In those days a man could impart whatever knowledge he
possessed and never mind about a license and grades, etc. To be able to
write, read and figure was a pearl of great price and parents were most
anxious that their children should have as much of this necessary gift as
they could possibly get. He lived in Montgomery County, a few miles from
Mt. Sterling, and brought his farm there to high production. He
understood surveying and road building, also the use of water and
drainage. He kept a school going on his farm, teaching some of the time
or hiring it done at other times. He joined the Masons when he was
twenty-three years old and continued in good standing with a lifetime
membership until his death.
About 1903, Henry Farmer sold his farm in Kentucky and moved to
Loving, New Mexico. This was a tragic move in a financial way, going as
they did to the dry arid section, where they had to depend upon water
allotments after the lush fields of Kentucky. When the irrigation dam
went out the land became of little value and the Farmers left for greener
pastures. After several years of looking about they finally settled on a
farm between Halsey and Shedd on the Brownsville. They lived there until
the children were grown and they had retired."

Henry is buried in the Shedd Cemetery; Shedd, Linn County, Oregon

Notes for RACHEL JANE COLDIRON:
Viola Davidson Farmer writes: "Rachel Coldiron was a beautiful woman,
small and well formed, with a great deal of strenght, vitality and
energy. She had blue-black hair and dark blue eyes. She was a good
Christian and raised her children in the Baptist church, where she sang
with a clear sure voice. She was always singing in the home. Her
children remembered waking up to wonderful food smells from the kitchen
and their mother's voice singing a good old hymn."

Rachel is buried in the Shedd Cemetery, in Linn, Oregon

Marriage Notes for HENRY FARMER and RACHEL COLDIRON:
Viola Davidson Farmer writes: "Henry Farmer and Rachel Coldiron were
married the last day of February, a leap year, a leap month and a leap
day. Their youngest son, Roy, liked to tease his mother about this
fact."

70 Rachel Jane Coldiron
Added by jayhenderson177 on 22 Mar 2009
COLDIRON. Rachel Jane [56]

Rachel was the second daughter and second child of Abner Lewis Coldiron [53] and Lucy Ann Ball. She was born on Martins Fork, Harlan Co., KY on 13 Aug 1853. She married Henry Clay Farmer on 29 Feb 1872 in Harlan Co. (see Marriage Book Vol A, page 112). They raised a very large family - 15 children (see Family Group Record).

Henry and Rachel left Harlan Co. sometime between 15 Aug 1883 (when their child Minnie was born in Harlan Co.) and 28 Apr 1884 (when their child John F. drowned in the Red River in Powell Co.) and relocated in Powell Co., KY where they lived for about 20 years. Dr. Daniel F. Coldiron [230], Rachel's nephew, remembers the day they left Harlan Co.

"I would like to tell you in detail about seeing my Uncle Henry Farmer passing our house in Harlan as he was moving from Harlan to Powell County (on Red River as they called it). I was a small boy but I well remember seeing them drive by. We were several hundred yards from the main road. Remember seeing a tear on my mother's cheek when she said she wondered if she would ever see them again." ........ from A Partial Genealogy of the Farmer Family, by Ruby Farmer Rogers and Kara Lee Coldiron.

Ruby Farmer Rogers corresponded with her grandmother, Rachel Coldiron, and felt she knew her fairly well. Ruby once wrote that the family moved to Powell County in 1884 to get away from Harlan. Ruby's father, Abner Coldiron Farmer, thought it was because of too much intermarriage between blood relatives and because of moonshining in Harlan County, although there was moonshining in Powell County as well. Ruby said that Henry and Rachel made a handsome couple. "He was easygoing while she was ambitious for her children. They both were anxious for their children to do well and be good people, but grandfather was the one intent on education."

In 1903 or 1904 they moved to Loving, New Mexico. Subsequently they moved to Washington state, and finally settled in Oregon. Dr. DanielF. Coldiron once said "I visited them in Oregon in 1925." Also in Ruby's and Kara Lee's Farmer book, Rachel is described on page 25 as follows:

"Rachel Coldiron was a beautiful woman, small and well-formed, with a great deal of strength, vitality and energy. She had blue-black hair and dark eyes. She was a good Christian and raised her children in the Baptist church, where she sang with a clear sure voice. She was always singing in the home. Her children remembered waking up to wonderful food smells from the kitchen and their mother's voice singing a good old hymn."

You are referred to the Farmer book noted above for more details of Henry and Rachel's family, as well as much more detail on the other Farmer families.

Rachel died in 1937 or 1938 in Shedd, Oregon at about 85 years of age. Henry died 22 Mar 1938 in Shedd, Oregon at 88 years of age. They are both buried in Shedd.
